Purpose of Position:

Under direct supervision of licensed nursing staff, Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) Trainees participate in a Certified Nurse Aide Training Program (NATP) hosted by NYC Health + Hospitals, and, upon completing the formal NATP curriculum, CNA Trainees assist with resident care through indirect care activities. In this sixteen (16) week temporary assignment, CNA Trainees complete the required classroom/laboratory and supervised clinical CNA training hours prescribed by the New York State Department of Health, and they gain practical observation and direct participation experience in a long-term care setting, so that successful CNA Trainees are amply prepared to provide safe and effective care in non-temporary positions requiring New York State Nurse Aide certification.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Completes health care setting (i.e., facility), health care system, and departmental orientation; observes nursing staff performing clinical and direct care duties; and assists nursing staff in providing indirect care, as described in “a” through “g” below: a. Changes linens and makes residents’ beds. b. Checks and replenishes residents’ bedside supplies, as necessary. c. Wipes down the tops of overbed tables and night stands. d. Delivers and distributes water pitchers. e. Assists with organizing residents’ clothing and personal belongings and labelling clothing for laundry. f. Assists with answering call bells, and notifies nursing staff of residents’ needs, as necessary. g. Assists with other related duties, as assigned. 2. Completes seventy (70) classroom/laboratory NATP training hours covering seven (7) instructional units: Introductory Curriculum, Basic Nursing Skills, Personal Care Skills, Mental Health and Social Service Needs, Care of Cognitively Impaired Residents, Basic Restorative Services, and Residents’ Rights. 3. Completes thirty-five (35) supervised clinical NATP training hours focused on the proper application of indirect care skills (e.g., infection control, safety, communication) and performance of direct care responsibilities (e.g. grooming, dressing, feeding, and transferring residents/patients) covered in classroom/laboratory training.

Qualification Requirements:

1. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

2. Must be must be able to read, write, understand and be understood in English to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.
